Val McDermid

Legendary mystery writer, feminist, outspoken lesbian, broadcaster and journalist, Val McDermid came from a working-class family in Kirkcaldy, Fife.  Her first novel, ‘Report for Murder’, was published by The Women’s Press in 1987 and followed a lesbian journalist. Her ‘breakthrough’ novel ‘The Mermaids Singing’ was published in 1995. Today her many books have sold in the millions, been translated into over 40 languages, and been adapted for television. She says, ‘I never imagined when I set off on this journey that I would have the success that has come my way.’ She now lives in Fife and Edinburgh.
