‘Me, Myself & Eye’, a collection of self-portraits over a lifetime, is one of Del LaGrace Volcano's many works tracing the power of gender images. Volcano was born intersex in California in 1957. They have used their art to explore lesbian masculinities and queer femininities, queerness, mourning and trauma. Their book ‘Love Bites’, published by Gay Men's Press in 1991, was praised, savagely condemned, and banned - its story features in the film ‘Rebel Dykes’. ‘I believe in crossing the line’, says Volcano, ‘not just once, but as many times as it takes to build a bridge we can all walk across’.
